Between 2013-2015 the Sonic Interaction Lab (SiLab) was a design and research laboratory which provided the space and facilities for experiments in music, sound and interaction, in a broad context. The main focus is the experience of sound in an interactive context. SiLab has been initiated by the research program ‘Music Design.’

This website functions as an archive of SiLab activities. The work of the SiLab is continued within the HKU Expertise Centre for Creative Technologies, Future Labs and the School Music and Technology.




Indie Games Concert

As part of the Indie Games Concert on the 16th of May at Paard van Troje in The Hague, SiLab has been participating in an audience game with live interactive instrumental music.

The Residentie Orkest will perform the music composed by students of the HKU, which is linked to the audience game developed by students of the HKU. The project is called En Masse!

Clinic Sonic Interaction Lab at Night Of The Nerds

_1NK7742Sonic Interaction Lab will be doing a clinic at Night Of The Nerds on the 2nd of June in Eindhoven.

Night Of The Nerds is organised by Future Bites. This organisation is has the aim to share knowledge about technology and science by presenting companies, organisations and projects who are active in the fields of innovation and technology to various audiences, with a focus on youth.

For Night Of The Nerds SiLab is developing a mobile lab and workshop about building your musical instrument with an accessible programming tool and sensors. All of this in a session of 45 minutes!

En Masse! project with Residentie Orkest


Together with the Dutch Residentie Orkest SiLab is developing an audience game with live orchestral interactive music, to be performed on the 16th of May 2015 at Het Paard van Troje in The Hague.

The team, consisting of third year students from the schools of Games and Interaction, Music and Technology, Art and Economics as well as Utrecht University, is designing a game that can be played by an audience of 700 people. An ensemble consisting of 23 musicians of the Dutch Residentie Orkest will perform the accompanying interactive music live on stage.


The project is part of the second edition of the Indie Games Concert Night, on the 16th of May 2015 at het Paard van Troje in The Hague.

KCO Kids project with Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

logo_concertgebouworkestEvery year there are two family concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam by het Concertgebouw Orkest (KCO). The KCO wants children to get more involved with the concert and the music played at these concerts in general. Therefore the KCO has asked the SiLab to start a research project for at least the duration of the next three concerts to come up with a playful and creative concept to enrich the experience of the children before, during and after the concert. Next to that the aim is to get the children more involved in classical music in general.

Right now we are preparing the research project and first tests to be held related to the first concert in June 2015. Updates will be posted here.

Sound Walk Hilversum and DBLR projects completed

SoundwalkDBLRIn the past four months a student team has been working as part of the SiLab in two projects:
– DBLR media
– Sound Walk Hilversum

The two assignments were:
– Sound Walk Hilversum: bring back liveliness to the city center of Hilversum by giving attention to the rich media history of the city. This is done by guiding people through the city with an interactive sound walk.
– DBLR: research new concepts and new application fields for the DBLR app/technology.

During the research process the students decided to merge the projects into one since the DBLR project was in need for content and the Sound Walk Hilversum project was in need of technology to test the ideas for the sound walk. The project continued under the project name ‘The Soundwalk’.

The concept for The Soundwalk is that of an interactive sound walk for a wide age group, with lots of playful elements and a finalising reward for the player. Target audience for the concept are families. More specific families visiting Beeld & Geluid (The Netherlands Institute For Sound and Vision) in Hilversum. The sound walk starts there and takes visitors on tour through some historical radio and television spots in the city and ends in the city center.

Below is a short video impression of the concept for The Soundwalk app. Please note that all of this was done within the context of a research project. This app is not a final product but a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the possibilities. The commissioners of the assignment B35/The White Box and DBLR Media are looking into a continuation of the ideas of the students and if it is possible to realise a real version of The Soundwalk.

Dropstuff Sonicscape test

The footage below is a capture of the test of the Sonicscape installation which was designed for Dropstuff. Unfortunately there were technical issues on the Dropstuff plaform but with this video it is possible to get an impression of the installation responding to player gestures and the look and feel of the sound and visuals. This installation allowed for two players at different locations (both with a large Dropstuff screen) to play a game and create a soundscape together.

At this moment, this project will not be followed up, but we are looking into ways to continue the research into live audio games in public spaces.

We Need Us

Artist Julie Freeman has been working together with the Open Data Institute and SiLab to create an online data driven audiovisual artwork, ‘We Need Us’ (www.weneedus.org) .

The artwork consists of an number of abstract dynamic animations rendered in a web browser. Each animation is driven by a live data feed from one of the projects from the zooniverse.org website. This online scientific platform allows users to classify data based on images for all sorts of research projects varying from the galaxy to the deep sea and cancer research. The database has a public API that allows you to query the classification data over a period of time.

In the animations, basic geometric 2D shapes move around and rotate in different ways depending on a set of rules. These rules are handcrafted functions that differ for each project and define the visual behaviour of the elements in relation to the incoming data.

Sound Walk Hilversum


Hilversum is often called the Mediacity of The Netherlands. The first broadcasts for radio and television came from this city. Famous is the Mediapark with many television studios and the offices of the broadcasters. However since some years Hilversum is not always and by everybody seen as center of Dutch radio and television.

Because of this B35 Concepts, a creative think thank of local entrepreneurs, has started a campaign for the city of Hilversum called The White Box. This campaign aims at generating creative media solutions for economical, cultural, educational and social issues within the city. By doing this the want to give the city of Hilversum a boost and establish connections between creative and commercial forces in Hilversum.

A multidisciplinary student team from the HKU have started a research project to come up with ideas for a sound walk in Hilversum to show the rich media history as well as the current creative forces within the city (center).

The students are doing research on the current state of sound walk and what technique is best to use in telling the story about media culture in Hilversum. They are establishing connections with the Netherlands Institute For Sound And Vision (Beeld en Geluid) as well as with historians with an expertise on local media history as with alumni from the HKU whom work in the field of (interactive) sound walks and narrative design.


DBLR Media

In september is het project DBLR App van start gegaan in het SiLab. Opdrachtgever voor dit project is DBLR Media. DBLR Media richt zich op de ontwikkeling van second screen- of companion Apps en is mede naar aanleiding van betrokkenheid bij APP de film (www.appdefilm.nl) en In De Lift van Silvester Zwaneveld (www.silvesterzwaneveld.nl) ontstaan.

De App (DBLR) maakt gebruik van state of art technologie voor het synchroniseren van voorstellingen op meerdere schermen en verpakt dat in een concept dat deze middelen voor een groot publiek interessant kan maken. Uiteraard valt of staat dat met goede content die optimaal gebruik weet te maken van de mogelijkheden. In de zoektocht naar spannende ideeën doorvoor is de samenwerking met de HKU gezocht. Dit met name binnen de context van interactieve non-lineaire entertainment, of een interactieve non-lineaire toepassing binnen een traditionele cultuurvorm. Denk hierbij aan concepten voor een museum, klassiek concert of een citytour.

Vanuit DBLR Media is de vraag neergelegd om innovatieve concepten te ontwikkelen die het publiek echt betrekt zodat zij er een rijkere ervaring aan overhouden dan bij traditionele media. De vorm en de content moeten dus een positieve bijdrage leveren aan de beleving.




A group of students from the Sound Design and Composition and Music Technology courses are currently involved with a biofeedback project. The aim is to develop new daring concepts of how to integrate biofeedback in a live performance and/or interactive installation.

As kickoff for this project we invited HKU alumni Beer van Geer to do a lecture on his work with biofeedback. His works ranges from art installations to applied games. Beer will be consultant on this project for the students.
